FAQs Close
Does it change my text immediately? No. The right-hand box shows a preview. Your text changes only when you choose Replace all or Replace first match, and Undo restores it.
What happens with a bad regular expression? You get a plain error message, such as an unterminated group, and your text stays untouched.
What if a pattern takes too long? Some patterns can take an extremely long time on certain text. Regular expressions run in a background worker that is stopped after 2 seconds, and you see a message instead of a frozen page. Try a simpler pattern.
How do I use captured groups? Turn on Regular expression, wrap part of the pattern in parentheses, and use $1, $2 and so on in the replacement. Use $$ for a literal dollar sign.
Why does it say whole words only found nothing? Whole-word matching needs the match not to be touching other letters, digits or underscores. Searching for "cat" will not match "concatenate".
Is my text uploaded? No. Everything, including the background worker, runs in your browser.
About this tool Close
Find and Replace is a browser-based version of the search-and-replace feature in a text editor, for cases when you only have a block of text and no editor.
It shows matches before replacing, limits expensive patterns, and can undo, so a mistake is easy to reverse.
Privacy
Your text is processed by JavaScript in your browser tab, including the background worker used for regular expressions. It is not sent to us or anyone else, and it is not saved. It is still visible to you and to any browser extensions you use, so clear it on shared computers. Read the policy .
